Back to Prose: Finding the Truth with Harlan Coben

Greetings!

I recently finished my second book for 2023! Yay to motivation!

The book was The Woods by Harlan Coben. An author I am reading for the second time but whom I will definitely go back to for more. See my full review here - The Woods, a review.

Mysteries, mysteries, mysteries.

It has a certain allure, doesn't it?

I grew up being pretty much a mystery-fanatic. Nancy Drew happened to be my best friend. It was a rush that I chased, a certain high from uncovering the truth. Sometimes, it is disappointing, sometimes it completely catches you of guard. Whatever it maybe, there is a certain liberation that comes with knowing the truth and that's what always pulled me towards this genre.

Our World isn't always transparent. We tend to see a version of it based on the lens we're looking through. The dynamics of what is real, what is the truth is often a characterization based on our relative position, or perspective. And that's where the mystery is - in the unknowns and the possibilities.

The not-knowing is a black hole that I try to run away from, mostly. I feel the need to always be aware, to always know the truth, but the piece we have is a fragment of a million different clues and reasons. It is relative. And it is an exhausting experience. Here, I'm not talking about the mystery that detectives try to solve or the mystery of who stole my dress or who ate that last piece of chocolate cake. Here, it is all about the mystery of life, of the people around us and their thoughts and intentions, of the uncertainty of what is going to come. This mystery presents us with little evidence, mostly circumstantial and a lot of eye witnesses. Who do we believe?

Going into this black hole is a sure shot way of never being able to find a way out. That's why I find comfort in stories, mystery novels and detectives like Sherlock Holmes, Nancy Drew and Hercule Poirot who've taught me their ways and with whom I can seek solace in during times my mind reaches that black hole. Their truth does set me free.

Here's to embracing the mystery in our lives,

M.
